Current Research Projects
The Foundation's current major research projects underway are:
Maritime Domain Awareness Study
This study seeks to characterise the trends influencing Australia's maritime security environment as well as identifying emerging threats and challenges - looking forward to 2030. It also aims to suggest possible policy and capability responses.
Protecting Australia's Maritime Border: Towards 2030
This study, undertaken at the request of Australian Customs and Border Protection, aims to characterise the trends and threats which are likely to challenge the integrity of Australia's maritime borders looking ahead to 2030.
Global Resource Security Project
The Kokoda Foundation will undertake research into the Security implications of future global resource challenges. High-level environmental, social and economic systems analysis highlights the risk in the medium term of growing shortages of energy, food, water and other resources. Such shortages will pose grave threats to national international security
The Kokoda Foundation is currently conducting a study to develop new ideas for a systems-based Defence logistics support environment (noting that in Australian Defence terms ‘logistics’ is defined as the functions required to support and sustain the Defence force).
Currently, the Defence logistics domain is seen by many as fragmented and lacking a holistic approach to not only the domain itself but the broader environment in which logistics operates. This tendency to view the various aspects of logistics through very specific lenses and a narrow field of view introduces operational, enterprise and financial risk to Defence.
Furthermore, given the present and anticipated economic climate, the current logistics domain struggles to offer Government the sufficient oversight and effective governance required to make strategic acquisition and sustainment decisions in support of the Australian Defence White Paper and consequent concepts of operations for use of the Australian Defence Force.
The Kokoda Foundation thanks our Principal sponsor , Accenture and our supporting sponsor RubiKon in partnering with the Foundation to conduct this study.
White Paper Study
Australia seeks to enhance its Defence capabilities to execute the range of probable future missions, from assistance to civil authorities and humanitarian relief to major combat operations.
The purpose of this study is to produce a paper which outlines lessons from past White papers, identifies changes in the global geo-strategic environment, enhancements in capabilities and raises both challenges and ideas. The output of the Kokoda study will contribute positively to the Future Defence White Paper.
On completion the Kokoda White Paper will have delivered the following benefits:
Critical thinking and significant intellectual contribution from senior Government, Defence and Industry representatives through interactive closed workshops.
Analysis of geo-strategic, technological, societal, economic and political realities and trends that will affect the future Australian defence and national security environment
A published body of work focused on Australia’s future Defence and National Security requirements.
The Kokoda Foundation thanks our sponsor Northrop Grumman in partnering with the Foundation to conduct this study.
The Kokoda Foundation Board has several other major research projects under active consideration.
